Training of Trainors on Seaweeds Production in ZSCMST

The three-day AFNR TOT on Seaweeds Production was conducted September 28 to 30, 2009 at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences & Technology (ZSCMST), Rio Hondo this city. There were 13 participants who attended the training, 3,7,2,1, from WMSU-CSM, ZSCMST, JRMSC-Tampilisan Campus, and JRMSC-Siocon campus, respectively. Six from the AFNR management attended the said training led by Dr. Chona Sarmiento, they were Dr. Vivian Molina, Ritzi Umacob, Erilee Salang, Alvin Deang and Mark Siason. Three personnel from the Research & Extension of the ZSCMST who assisted the two AFNR trainers on Seaweeds; Oliver Tito and Rolando Pelingon. Dr. Rio Naguit,a faculty from JRMSC-KNAS campus who is an expert on Marine Biology was also invited as one of the resource speakers.
The training involved lecture and hands-on activities. The trainees were taught on the various aspects in seaweeds production such as on how to identify the different varieties of seaweeds, determine moisture content, prepare seedlings, tie the seedlings using the mono-line method and actual planting in the farm area, harvesting and post-harvest handling works on seaweeds production. The trainees were able to learn the whole production management practices for the duration of the training.
