Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) is located in Western Mindanao (Region IX), Philippines. The agriculture, forestry and aquaculture sector has greatly improved ZamPen's economic conditions with significant contributions to poverty reduction. Production, processing and exporting seaweeds, coconut and rubber contribute positively to foriegn trade and remain as one of the country's largest sources of employment in the countryside. The region's raw materials—mostly derived from coconut, seaweeds and rubber—presently provides new Science and Technology (S&T) applications for product development and quality improvement with enormous potential to value-added contributions to commercial and industrial uses, thereby sustaining the livelihood of farmers and fishermen in the countryside.
AFNR Project 3.1k is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and administered by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD). The project focuses on enhancing the comptence and institutional employability of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource (AFNR) students and graduates through application of S&T and acquisition of entrepreneurial skills in agri-based production and processing technologies, product standartization, quality improvement and overall management and development of financially viable micro and small enterprises along the region's major dollar-earning export commodities. It serves as the venue for "hands on" S&T cum entrepreneurship-based laboratory exercises and in-campus internship or on-the-job training (OJT) program. The AFNR students are given respective responsibilities and accountabilities in all aspects of the operations, management and development of each of the ten students' IGPs/micro-enterprises: production and operations, sales and marketing, credit and collection, accounting and auditing as well as the overall financial management.
AFNR Project 3.1k shall be integrated with other income-generating projects (IGPs) of the three largest State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in Region IX—Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) in Zamboanga City and the Jose rizal Memorial State University in Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte. Through the project, the AFNR students—the main beneficiaries—produce 10 different products available for sale to interested buyers: coco sugar, jelly, jam, wet and dried seaweeds, rubber budwood and seedlings, tissue cultured plantlets and seedlings (banana, abaca and rubber) derived from ZamPen's three major commodities (coconut, seaweeds and rubber).
